I was asked to arrange "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" as a bass trombone feature. All I really knew about bass trombone at the time was: ledger lines. Yeah, baby! So there's plenty of written solo heat for the bass 'bonist and much of it is below the staff. There's also a solo chorus for plunger tenor trombone - the grinchier and growlier, the better. This happy creation goes from slinky swing to up-tempo and back, dropping presents down chimneys the whole way. The arrangement is available from Pro Jazz Charts. You can hear a great recording of it by the Airmen of Note here .
