I have several pieces for concert band published by Carl Fischer:

* Festive Dances (2001), a three movement suite, grade 2-3
* Gates of Freedom (2001), a march for beginning bands, grade 1
* Ascendance (2002), a contest/concert piece (fast/slow/fast), grade 3-4
* Fantasia for a King (2002), variations on "Good King Wenceslas," grade 4
* The Flight of the Falcon
(2003), a contest/concert piece, grade 3-4
* Frontier (2005), a contest/concert piece with a Western flavor, grade 3-4
* Songs of the West (2003), a rhapsodic treatment of "Cindy" and "Streets of Laredo" for middle-school band, grade 2
* Uprising (2003), a fun piece in minor mode for middle school band, grade 2
* Under the Double Eagle
(2006), J.F. Wagner's classic march arranged for smaller concert bands, grade 3

Ask me about these unpublished works:

* Mysterious Presence (2006), a grade 4 chorale prelude, mournful but ultimately uplifting, based on the hymn Father, In Thy Mysterious Presence Kneeling. Written in memory of my beloved nephew, Jonathan Barch

* Across the Clouds (2006), a grade 4 allegro in song form, for solo euphonium and band. Written for Will Jones of the U.S. Air Force Band and premiered at the U.S. Army Band Tuba-Euphonium Conference in January 2006

* The Front Page
(2005), a grade 4 concert march commissioned by the Tallahassee Winds

If you search hard enough you can also find Three Yuletide Evergreens (2005), a set of three carols (O, Little Town of Bethlehem, Away In a Manger and Joy to the World) for band and chorus, published by Masters Music Publications.

These Aren't the Bobs You're Looking For

If you were googling Robert Thurston, a composer-arranger originally from Tallahassee, Florida, you’ve come to the right place. But I have many virtual doppelgangers out there.

You might have been searching for Robert Thurston (b. 1936) the science fiction writer. Sorry, I’m not him. I used to write for a newspaper, but these days I just amuse myself with stuff like what you see here.

The Internet Movie Database lists three actors named Robert Thurston, one of whom has worked steadily in TV and film since 1989. His credits include a 1998 movie with the intriguing title of Zacharia Farted. I’m not these guys either. I did play on the soundtrack to the 1984 movie A Flash of Green. It's one of the few movies ever made that credits soundtrack musicians by name; unfortunately it's also one of very few for which IMDb does not list every credit.

I came across another Bob Thurston who is an amazing photographer.

You might also have been looking for my first cousin once removed, Bob Thurston, whose Web site is unfortunately not active right now. Bob lives in New England. Like me, he is musically inclined and enjoys writing. He has recorded about half a dozen CDs.

Robert W. Thurston is a Russian history scholar. I'm definitely not him. I took one semester of Russian in college ... what a spectacular disaster that was. I can still count to four, though.

Lastly, who can forget Robert Henry Thurston (1839-1903): mechanical engineering education pioneer, first president of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. I'm pretty sure I'm not this guy, because I am soooo not mechanically inclined.

If my name is your name too, please say hello.

The notes I handle no better than many pianists. But the pauses between the notes — ah, that is where the art resides.
